SURREY MEMORIAL HOSPITAL | 7,132 SF | INSTITUTIONAL DESIGN
In the past two years because of the pandemic and long hours of healthcare workers staying at the hospital facilities and serving the people, it has been very challenging for those of them who have children to complete their shifts with a peace of mind and not have to worry about them being left with the right person. The goal of this project is to design a space where frontline/healthcare workers can complete their day or night shifts without having to worry about the inability to do it all as parents because it can be very stressful to find the right environment to leave a child in. The daycare is programmed in a way to help reduce the stress of an emergency, regular shift, and on-call healthcare workers and during the day shifts. The daycare will be designed in a way to fill up the void within the children from spending long hours and a lot of days away from their parents, to make them feel comfortable and cozy when they are there.
The concept of this project is a sandbox as it symbolizes playfulness and fun. Sand inspired the designer of this project to work with organic and raw shapes to create a sense of uniqueness and purity. The Integration of nature inspired her to create a gentle environment, working with a soft color palette, biophilic elements, and comfortable finishes.
The sand, though fine and seemingly insignificant, is essential for the growth of nature and sustaining life on our planet. Sand, contains primitive and elemental information, linked to our memory and our senses, allows us to experience textures, colors, smells, and a set of emotions that enrich perception and learning in early childhood. The sandbox, a place in which there are opportunities for children to subconsciously build, shape, change, imagine, order, simplify, perfect, and embellish a concept or an idea.
When children are playing inside a sandbox, the sand is hugging their bodies, a hug is a home that embraces multiple cultures, different beliefs, and traditions, a space of tolerance, cooperation, and happiness.
